Hokitika Highway Holiday: A Family Adventure

So, we did it! We, a family of four (two slightly-terrified-of-driving parents and two wildly enthusiastic kids), actually drove to Hokitika! I’ll admit, the thought of navigating New Zealand’s winding roads with a car full of snacks, questionable singalongs, and the ever-present threat of car sickness had me slightly stressed. But, oh my goodness, Hokitika was worth every hairpin bend.

Our three-day trip was less about meticulously planned itineraries and more about embracing the unexpected – a perfect approach for a family adventure, I’ve discovered. We left [Starting Point] early, armed with an over-packed car, a playlist of questionable 80s classics, and a healthy dose of optimism. The drive itself was stunning. The scenery changed constantly, from lush green valleys to dramatic coastal views. The kids were surprisingly well-behaved (mostly!), entertained by the ever-changing landscape and the promise of ice cream at our first stop.

Day 1: Beach, Jade, and Pancakes

We arrived in Hokitika in the late afternoon, checked into our cozy Airbnb (highly recommend booking in advance!), and immediately headed for the beach. The Hokitika Beach is gorgeous – wide, sandy, and perfect for running around. The kids spent hours building sandcastles, while we relaxed and soaked up the sun. Dinner was a simple affair – fish and chips by the beach, followed by a surprisingly delicious (and much-needed) ice cream.

The next morning, we visited a jade carving workshop. It was fascinating to see the artisans at work, transforming rough stones into beautiful pieces of jewellery and art. The kids were particularly captivated by the polishing process – shiny things are always a hit! We ended the day with a truly memorable pancake breakfast at a local cafe – fluffy, delicious, and the perfect fuel for another day of exploring.

Day 2: Exploring the Great Outdoors

Day two was all about nature. We took a short drive to the Hokitika Gorge, a stunning turquoise river flowing through a lush rainforest. The vibrant colour of the water was breathtaking, and the kids loved exploring the various walking tracks. We packed a picnic lunch, which we enjoyed by the riverbank – the perfect spot for a family break. In the afternoon, we went for a walk along the Hokitika River. The scenery was beautiful, and we even spotted a few native birds.

Day 3: Souvenirs and Sweet Farewells

Our final day was a bit more relaxed. We spent the morning browsing the local shops, picking up souvenirs (mostly for the kids, of course!). We discovered a fantastic little shop selling local honey and other goodies – a perfect place to grab some treats to take home. After lunch, it was time to head back. The drive back felt shorter this time, filled with memories of stunning scenery, happy kids, and the delicious taste of Hokitika pancakes.

Tips for Family Road Trips to Hokitika:

  • Book accommodation in advance: Especially during peak season.
  • Pack plenty of snacks and drinks: Keeps everyone happy and avoids meltdowns.
  • Plan for breaks: Regular stops are essential, especially with kids.
  • Embrace spontaneity: Don’t be afraid to deviate from your plans.
  • Enjoy the journey: The drive itself is part of the adventure!

Hokitika exceeded all our expectations. It’s a beautiful town with friendly people, stunning scenery, and plenty of activities for families. Despite my initial anxieties, the road trip was an absolute blast. We’re already planning our next adventure!
