Woodend Beach Camping: Three Days of Kiwi Family Fun
Woodend Beach, just a short drive from Christchurch, proved to be the perfect spot for our recent three-day family camping adventure. Forget the pressures of a perfectly planned itinerary; this was all about embracing the simple joys of nature, quality time together, and the undeniable charm of a classic Kiwi camping experience.
Day 1: Setting Up Camp and Beach Bliss
Arriving at Woodend Beach Campground, we were immediately struck by its relaxed atmosphere. The campground itself is well-maintained, with plenty of space between campsites, ensuring a good level of privacy. Setting up our tent (a slightly chaotic but ultimately successful operation involving much laughter and a few minor mishaps) was followed by a quick dash to the beach. The soft, golden sand was irresistible, and the kids spent hours building sandcastles, paddling in the shallows, and chasing the ever-present seagulls. The evening ended with a delicious BBQ, the smell of sausages and burgers mingling with the salty sea air – a truly idyllic scene.
Day 2: Exploring the Surroundings and Coastal Walks
Day two was all about exploration. We packed a picnic and headed off for a coastal walk. The views were stunning – dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The kids, initially complaining about the length of the walk, were quickly captivated by the beauty of their surroundings. We discovered hidden rock pools teeming with tiny crabs and starfish, a highlight for the younger members of our party. The afternoon was spent back at the campsite, playing frisbee, telling stories, and enjoying the simple pleasure of being together in the great outdoors. The night sky, unpolluted by city lights, was a breathtaking spectacle, filled with a dazzling array of stars.
Day 3: Farewell Beach and Sweet Memories
Our final day was a bittersweet mix of lingering beach time and the inevitable packing up of our campsite. We squeezed in one last beach walk, collecting seashells and making memories before the reality of dismantling our temporary home set in. The packing-up process, while less chaotic than the setting-up, still involved its own unique brand of family teamwork and good-natured banter. As we drove away, we were already planning our return trip.
